1cupmixed dried fruits (such as cranberries, apricots, and raisins)
1zestof 1 orange, finely grated
0.5cupchopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
1eggbeaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine the active dry yeast, warm milk, and a teaspoon of sugar. Stir gently and allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy, indicating that the yeast is active.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, remaining sugar, sea salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until evenly mixed.
In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter and eggs until smooth. Once combined, pour in the frothy yeast mixture and add the grated orange zest. Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands until a cohesive dough begins to form.
Gently fold in the mixed dried fruits and chopped nuts, ensuring they’re evenly distributed throughout the dough.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes, or until it feels smooth and elastic to the touch.
Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it tightly with a clean kitchen towel, and set it in a warm, draft-free area to rise until it doubles in size—this should take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Shape it into a round loaf and transfer it to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Using a sharp knife, make a shallow cross incision on top of the loaf to allow it to expand in the oven. Cover again and let it rest for another 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Just before baking, brush the top of the loaf with the beaten egg to achieve a beautiful golden color during baking.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Once baked, allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Serve warm on a festive platter, dusted lightly with powdered sugar. Pair with butter or cream cheese for spreading.
